Calakmul
A Mayan city in the heart of the jungle
Exploring the Mayan world on a self-drive tour requires a well-planned itinerary. This 15-day trip connects the major archaeological sites of Yucatán and Chiapas, without limiting the route to the most popular stops.
The route passes through more remote areas, particularly around Calakmul and Palenque, then returns to the historic cities of Yucatán before heading to Holbox. This is a tour for independent travelers curious about Mayan culture, nature, and driving in Mexico. (This can be organised with a private driver)

Exploring a Mayan city in the heart of the biosphere. Depart early in the morning to explore the Calakmul site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled in the heart of the Campeche jungle, this ancient city was one of the largest Mayan centers and a rival to Tikal in Guatemala. Few visitors venture here, which reinforce the sense of exploration. The tour takes place in the middle of dense vegetation, with the chance to spot howler monkeys, toucans, and, for the luckiest ones, the jaguar that still inhabits the reserve. In the early afternoon, departure for Chiapas to reach Palenque.
Overnight at a hotel in Palenque
Palenque, the heart and soul of Chiapas. Visit the archaeological site of Palenque, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Mexico. Its temples rise from the rainforest and testify of the peak of the Classic Maya civilization. In the afternoon, take an excursion to Roberto Barrios Waterfalls, located about 40 minutes away. The cascading falls form natural pools where you can swim. Far from the crowds, the place retains a peaceful and authentic atmosphere.

Depart from the hotel and head to the state of Campeche. On the way, stop at the village of Miguel Colorado to explore the Cenote Azul, surrounded by lush forest. You can cool off by swimming in the cenote’s fresh waters, or take one of the kayaks provided or set off on a hike. For the more adventurous, head up to a height of 80 meters to cross the cenote via zip line and admire its 250-meter diameter. Arrival in the late afternoon in Campeche, the city of pastel colors.

Departure for Uxmal, one of the jewels of Puuc architecture. Its pyramids, palaces, and depictions of Chac, the rain god, are a testament to great architectural mastery. The site is less crowded than Chichén Itzá, which reinforces the experience. Arrival in Mérida in the late afternoon.

A little paradise just an hour from Mérida. Depart for a small fishing port north of Mérida. By boat, you’ll reach a shallow lagoon where the only way to get around is by kayak. The journey takes you through the heart of the mangroves, home to many birds, including flamingos. The route leads to an ojo de agua, a freshwater spring in the middle of the lagoon, perfect for swimming. The return trip includes a simple, traditional lunch: Mexican-style fish ceviche. The late afternoon is free in Mérida, giving you the chance to stroll through the historic center or along the Paseo de Montejo.

Departure for the little-known Yokdzonot cenote. This site, managed by a local cooperative, offers a chance to swim in a pristine natural setting. Continue to Chichén Itzá, a major UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the cultural fusion between the Maya and Toltecs. The Pyramid of Kukulkán, the observatory, and the ball court bear witness to the greatness of this city. Arrival in Valladolid at the end of the day. This small colonial town retains a peaceful pace of life and streets lined with colorful houses.

If you’re visiting during the season (June through September), you might even spot whale sharks off the coast.
