At the gates of the sacred, in the footsteps of the gods
This morning, you’ll head north from the city. Your first stop is the Basilica of Guadalupe, the most visited shrine in Latin America. Every year, this site attracts millions of pilgrims who come to honor the Black Virgin, a symbol of popular faith and national identity. Then, on to Teotihuacan, the mysterious “City of the Gods.” This vast archaeological site impresses with its two monumental pyramids, the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, as well as the Avenue of the Dead, lined with temples, bas-reliefs, and palaces. In the 7th century, Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the world, with nearly 200,000 inhabitants. Although its origins remain unclear, its urban planning, beliefs, and influence bear witness to a fascinating civilization

This morning, you’ll leave Mexico City to head to Puebla, nicknamed the “City of Angels.” Located at the foot of two majestic volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, this city founded in 1531 by the Spanish is a jewel of colonial architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival, you’ll explore its historic center, a maze of paved streets lined with houses featuring facades covered in talavera, the famous local polychrome ceramic. You’ll then visit the Capilla del Rosario, considered one of the finest examples of Baroque art in Latin America. Next, head to the Barrio de los Sapos, an antique district with a bohemian vibe, perfect for strolling or unearthing some traditional handicrafts. Finally, keep in mind that Puebla is also a mecca for Mexican cuisine. If you’re curious, try mole poblano, an iconic sauce made from dozens of ingredients: a true blend of culinary traditions.

Just a few miles from Puebla, today you’ll set out on a journey rich in spirituality and cultural heritage. First, head to Cholula, which was one of the largest religious centers in Mesoamerica. Climb the steps of the Great Pyramid, whose summit is crowned by the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, built by the Spanish to Christianize a sacred indigenous site. The contrast between the beliefs is evident in every stone.
Next, in the nearby village of Santa María Tonantzintla, you’ll visit a unique Baroque church. The interior is a veritable feast for the eyes: indigenous angel heads, tropical flowers, exuberant fruits, and pre-Hispanic cosmological elements. Finally, the day concludes with a visit to San Francisco Acatepec, a church whose façade, entirely covered in colorful tiles, makes it a living masterpiece of Mexican folk art.

On the way to Oaxaca, you’ll pass through the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional biodiversity. Some specimens reach several meters in height and are centuries old.
Finally, a visit to the local botanical garden allows you to deepen your knowledge of these iconic Mexican plants. Used since pre-Columbian times for food, medicine, and construction, cactus are a testament to ancestral knowledge in harmony with nature.

You’ll start the day with a visit to one of Mexico’s most important archaeological sites: Monte Albán, perched at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. From this ridge overlooking the valleys of Oaxaca, you’ll explore the grand plazas, pyramids, astronomical observatory, and ancient tombs. Moreover, the panoramic view is exceptional. It offers a deeper understanding of the spiritual depth of Mexican culture off the beaten path, carried here by Zapotec traditions.

Every alleyway reveals a facet of the past: the Zócalo, Santo Domingo Church, artisanal markets, and contemporary art galleries. Finally, the city invites you to discover its renowned cuisine. Quesillo, tlayudas, or cinnamon chocolate—all authentic flavors to savor during a local dinner.

It is considered a sacred entity by indigenous peoples.

Your day continues in Mitla, an ancient Zapotec ceremonial center. Unlike Monte Albán, Mitla is distinguished by its geometric ornaments finely carved into the stone, unique in Mesoamerica.
