Length of stay: 15 days

Theme: Family fun in Mexico

Difficulty: Pour tout public

In my opinion, this itinerary captures the essence of Mexico. It offered me all the richness I love about this country: the grandeur of the archaeological sites, the warmth of the people I met in the villages, the raw beauty of landscapes like Sumidero Canyon, and the sheer pleasure of ending the trip with my feet in the sand in Holbox. The itinerary allows for moments of relaxation without ever losing its depth. If you’re looking for a balanced and deeply human way to discover Mexico, I highly recommend it.

Day 2 :

México City - Coyoacán - México City

You start the day by exploring the Zócalo, the large central square that has been the beating heart of the city since pre-Hispanic times. Directly in front of you stands the Metropolitan Cathedral, and just a few steps away lie the foundations of the Aztecs’ Great Temple. The past is there, buried beneath the cobblestones, yet still very much present. At the National Palace, Diego Rivera’s murals depict a history of Mexico marked by struggles, cultural fusion, and resilience. In the afternoon, the atmosphere changes. The Coyoacán neighborhood offers a shaded respite, with gardens, quiet squares, and houses steeped in history. This is where Frida Kahlo lived, in a house that has become a quiet place of pilgrimage. Further on, Leon Trotsky’s house tells another story of exile.

Day 3 :

México City - Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe - Teotihuacan - Puebla

In the morning, you’ll leave the capital and head north. First stop: the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the continent’s most important pilgrimage sites. Shortly after: the monumental site of Teotihuacan stretches out before you. A sacred city built long before the Aztecs, it was one of the largest urban complexes in the ancient world. The Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, connected by the Avenue of the Dead, bear witness to the cosmic power these peoples attributed to their architecture.

In the afternoon, head to Puebla, nestled at the foot of Popocatépetl. Here, the colorful tiled domes and wrought-iron balconies tell another chapter of Mexico’s history: that of the Spanish colonial era. Take a stroll through the historic center, between the Capilla del Rosario and the narrow streets of the Sapos neighborhood.

Day 4 :

Puebla - Cholula - Oaxaca

This gem was the first city built in Mexico in 1531 upon the arrival of the Spanish. It served as the headquarters of General Ignacio Zaragoza’s army, which defeated French forces on May 5, 1862. It was from that date onward that Puebla took the official name of Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza. Walking tour through the city center where we will discover, among other sites, the Capilla del Rosario, the Santo Domingo Church, the Zócalo, and the “Barrio de los Sapos.” This old colonial town is nestled in a fertile valley surrounded by mountains, most of them volcanic like Popocatepetl (5,452 m), and is famous for its 60 churches and, above all, for the production and use of multicolored ceramic tiles.

We head to the village of Cholula (20 km) at the foot of the Popocatepetl volcano (5,452 meters). We suggest climbing the hundreds of steps of the pyramid, atop which stands a majestic colonial church built upon the arrival of the Spanish under the orders of Hernán Cortés, who, to put an end to Indian supremacy, ordered the church erected there as if to ward off misfortune.

Day 5 :

Oaxaca - Monte Alban - Oaxaca

Oaxaca, the heart of Mexico. In the morning, you’ll head up into the hills. A few kilometers from downtown Oaxaca, the road climbs gently to the archaeological site of Monte Albán, perched at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. The light is crisp, the wind is dry, and the view of the valley is spectacular. This plateau was one of the most important ceremonial centers in Mesoamerica. The Zapotecs developed their own writing system, a solar calendar, and a worldview deeply rooted in the stars. On site, the silence accentuates the power of the place.

Return to Oaxaca for a lunch break. If you feel like it, this is the perfect opportunity to try a tlayuda, a local specialty. The afternoon continues through the city’s narrow streets.

Day 6 :

Oaxaca - Teotitlán del Valle - Tehuantepec

Today, you’ll set out to discover rare crafts. In Teotitlán del Valle, a small village east of Oaxaca, textile traditions have been passed down for generations. In the workshop of a family of artisans, you’ll learn the secrets of natural dyeing using cochineal, indigo, or walnuts. Each piece is unique. Then the journey continues toward Tehuantepec, a region straddling the two oceans. The landscape changes once again, and the vegetation becomes denser. You enter the Isthmus, that narrow strip of land with a distinct character.

Day 7 :

Tehuantepec - Tuxtla Gutiérrez - Sumidero Canyon - San Cristobal de las Casas

Early morning departure for Tuxtla Gutiérrez, then to the village of Chiapa de Corzo. This is where the tour of the Sumidero Canyon begins, carved into the rock by the Grijalva River. Aboard a lancha, you glide between the vertiginous walls, which are sometimes nearly 1,000 meters high. The silence is broken only by the cries of a heron or the quiet glide of a crocodile skimming the water’s surface. Here, nature reigns supreme in all its unadorned glory. The landscape alone is enough to create emotion. You then head up to the Chiapas Highlands, arriving in San Cristóbal de las Casas in the late afternoon.

Day 8 :

San Cristobal de las Casas - San Juan Chamula - Zinacatan - San Cristobal de las Casas

In the morning, we’ll head to the Tzotzil villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán. In these communities, indigenous traditions are part of everyday life. Inside the church in Chamula, there are no benches, no masses like elsewhere: the floor is covered with pine needles, candles burn close to the ground, and the faithful whisper prayers in the Mayan language. A powerful syncretism. In Zinacantán, you’ll discover a different relationship with the sacred: ceremonial weavings, home altars, colorful markets. Back in San Cristóbal, you’ll have time to wander: bookstores, quiet cafés, art galleries.

Palenque - Campeche

We’ll leave the hotel early in the morning to avoid the crowds and explore Palenque. As you wander through this Mayan site, you’ll enter a secret and mysterious place, where the architecture stands out for its elegance and more modest scale compared to other Mayan ruins. Palenque is often considered one of Mexico’s most magical sites. In the middle of the lush jungle, you’ll discover buried ruins that evoke the past splendor of temples and palaces, once adorned with polychrome paintings. It’s easy to imagine the bustling esplanades, filled with a crowd of richly dressed people. In the early afternoon, departure for the charming city of Campeche.

Day 11 :

Campeche - Cenote - Uxmal - Mérida

The cenotes, natural pools of crystal-clear freshwater, create a magical play of light when the sun’s rays shine through them. Along the way, you’ll pass through a typical Mayan market where the vibrant colors of the fruits and vegetables rival those of the women’s traditional clothing. Exploring the City of Uxmal. This peaceful, off-the-beaten-path site is a true favorite. Uxmal means “Built Three Times” in Maya, but in reality, the city was built five times. The very dry region is marked by the omnipresent presence of the rain god, Chac, whose images adorn the structures.

Mérida, the White City. The capital of Yucatán, Mérida combines economic vitality with colonial charm. The city boasts beautiful historic architecture and lively squares, where it’s a pleasure to enjoy a drink to the sound of a marimba orchestra.

Day 12 :

Mérida - Izamal - Chichen Itza - Valladolid

Early morning departure for Izamal, a charming village known as “the yellow town” because of its bright facades. Designated a Pueblo Mágico, Izamal charms visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and paved streets. Its imposing San Antonio de Padua Convent, built on top of an ancient Mayan pyramid, houses the largest enclosed atrium in Latin America, a powerful symbol of Mexican religious syncretism.

In the afternoon, explore Chichen Itza, the most famous archaeological site in Yucatán. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and designated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it blends Mayan heritage with Toltec influences. The Pyramid of Kukulcán, with its ingenious play of shadows during the equinoxes, bears witness to the astronomical and architectural knowledge of these civilizations.
