Mexico is a country with a thousand faces, offering an incredible diversity of landscapes, cultures and flavors. My recent trip to Oaxaca, followed by an adventure along the Pacific coast, gave me the opportunity to discover one of the country’s most fascinating regions. From the bustling city of Oaxaca to the peaceful beauty of the coast’s beaches, here’s an insight into my adventure through this region.
A morning in Oaxaca
My journey begins with a direct flight from Merida to Oaxaca, the capital of the state of Oaxaca. I land early, at around 07:00, which gives me a chance to see the city awake. The market stalls gradually open up, and I settle down to enjoy a hot chocolate at the Mayordomo on the Zocalo, the city’s central square. It’s the perfect time to observe local life.
Discovering Oaxaca
Much of my time in Oaxaca is spent visiting hotels to assess the quality of our service providers, but also to find new gems for our travelers. Between visits, I take the time to discover the city’s cultural heritage by visiting the Museo Textil, a free experience, and exploring the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, a pleasant surprise.
The animated templo Santo Domingo
In the afternoon, I was lucky enough to attend a wedding at templo Santo Domingo, an experience filled with color and joy. The local traditions, costumes and traditional music added a special touch to my stay.
The treasures of the mezcaleria Lalocura
My visit to the mezcaleria Lalocura turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip. Eduardo, the owner, is passionate about his region and produces mezcal organically, using traditional methods. After tasting 23 types of mezcal, I succumbed and bought two bottles to take home with me.
Adventure in the pueblos mancomunados
I explored the villages nestled in the mountains northeast of Oaxaca City. Benito Juarez welcomed me with its refreshing air, beautiful natural landscapes, and activities such as hiking, suspension bridges and zip-lining. Meeting the May y José family gave me an authentic insight into local life and cuisine.
Puerto Escondido and its surroundings
Mexico’s Pacific coast has seduced me with its magnificent beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Puerto Escondido is a paradise for surfers, but swimming in the bioluminescence of the Manialtepec lagoon is a breathtaking experience, like bathing in a starry sky. The beaches of Mazunte and San Agustinillo are perfect for relaxing and exploring the local mangroves.
Maritime experience in San Agustin
My journey continued with a stop at San Agustin, a small, authentic fishing village. A sea excursion with Alfonso allowed me to discover the underwater beauty of the region during an unforgettable snorkeling session, followed by a delicious ceviche and a well-deserved michelada!
Chilling out in Huatulco
My last step took me to Huatulco, a seaside village just perfect for families. The quiet bays and serene beaches make it a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the water.
An experience rich in contrasts
My journey through Oaxaca and Mexico’s Pacific coast was an adventure filled with contrasts, cultural discoveries, authentic encounters and exquisite flavors. I hope this insight has inspired you to explore this fascinating region, where every corner holds its share of surprises and wonder.
